Vickey

Film name: 50/50

Year released: 2011

Director: Jonathan Levine

Studio: Mandate Pictures, Point Grey

Worldwide Box-Office Gross: US $41.1 million

Why this movie rocks: This movie talks about the pain and struggles of having cancer, and knowing that you have a 50% chance of dying but if you look on the flip side, you have 50% chance of living. This movie did not go into the gross detail of why cancer sucks, with the humour topped off, but it did show the surface of the pain and rage these patients would go through, wanting life to be over because of the constant pain they are in. I love this movie because it is not a serious kind of movie but still is able to convey their message effectively. Another reason why is because this movie was actually based on the screenplay writer, Will Reiser’s early 20’s life. That made the movie even more significant than it was.

Best scene: Definitely the scene where Adam, the main character screams after driving his friend, Kyle to a hill. The scream he let out was out of frustration, anger, and pain because of the cancer that has been eating him inside. I love that scene because of the scream, we all need it sometimes in life.

Film name: Neighbors

Year released: 2014

Director: Nicholas Stoller

Studio: Point Grey Pictures, Good Universe

Worldwide Box-Office Gross: USD $270.7 million

Why this movie rocks: It’s a great movie because of the humour in it and how great the actors played in this movie. It is a war between the young and the adults, where you can clearly see the age gap. I find It interesting because of how the age gap was portrayed. The young do not care about how much noise they are making, they just want to have fun, and enjoy the moment. Whereas the adults know how irritating it is to be disturbed.

Best scene: Where Zac Efron threw a big gym rubber inflated ball at Seth Rogen’s face and said: Sorry, my ball just got into your face.” That was a great pun.

Film name: Me and Earl and the dying girl

Year Released: 2015

Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

Main Cast: Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke

Studio: Indian Paintbrush

Worldwide Box-Office Gross: US$ 9.1million

Brief synopsis: A comedy drama film based on a novel by Jesse Andrews. Greg Gaines is a high school senior who drift through life with various cliques along with his co-worker Earl. Both spend their time together making films together. Greg’s life change when he finds out his childhood friend Rachel diagnosed with leukemia. All three of them venture through a friendship where hope and trust come in.

Why this movie rocks: I started off reading the novel itself, it was just another normal book in my opinion, but when I watch the movie, I instantly fell in love as the film did an excellent job in highlighting the main parts and plots in the book, it showcases the story more. Along with the cast who showcase the characters really well, literally making them alive. Like those characters where they are just so memorable. Next, I also like the touch where the director added stop-motion scenes into the movie, showing the creative side of Greg and their own Earl in producing their own low budget films. You really would not feel bored throughout the whole movie but rather entertained even though the movie does not have a climax that make your heart pause. Overall, this film is pleasantly satisfying to watch, definitely heart-warming.

Best scene: Greg and Earl accidentally were on drugs when they ate cookies given by a drug dealer. The scene where Greg zoomed out in class and table and chairs started moving and shifting in sequence. Also, when Greg, Earl and Rachel were having ice cream by the roadside, the focus on the ice cream filmed in a wavy unstable way. To me, these scenes really did succeed in portraying how it feels like to be ‘on drugs’.

Film name: Coraline

Year Released: 2009

Director: Henry Selick

Main Cast: Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French

Studio: Laika Pandemonium

Worldwide Box-Office Gross: US$ 124.6 million

Brief synopsis: A 3D stop motion dark fantasy horror film based on the novel by Neil Gaimen. This film depicts an adventurous girl, Coraline, who stumbled upon a hidden small door that leads to an idealized parallel world in her new home. Being unaware that the alternate world contains a dark sinister secret that haunts her as she finds her way out from it.

Why this movie rocks: First of, I am already drool over the movie in the first place because I love stop-motion animation, plus it’s by the production company Laika which always produce quality stop-motion films. Indeed, the crafts and puppets in the movie were very well made, I like the small details and the colours the creator decided to go with, giving the movie an old vintage vibe. Next, the soundtracks are just so catchy. I watched this movie 6 years ago but up till today, the melody can be play in my head easily.

Easily one of my favorite stop-motion animation ever !

Best scene: Coraline found out the other mother’s evil plan and she escaped from the pink palace. Having the thought of walking away from the palace but eventually finding out that no matter how long she walks, she eventually walks back to the palace because it’s just a big circle after all. The scene was great as it shows the setting of the palace and the surrounding slowly collapsing and fade into whiteness. Showing the true colour of the other world snapdragons.

ILyas

Film name: Deepwater Horizon Year released: 2016 Director: Peter Berg Worldwide Box-Office Gross: $61,284,947

Why the movie rocks: This movie is about an oil rig off the coast in the Gulf of Mexico, Deepwater Horizon. What I love the most of the movie is the effects in the movie which makes it more realistic. I parts of the movie, it shows the activity of the sea bed which is unstable and also the uses of fires in the movie. The film also shows us the hardship and struggle there is to work on an oil rig and for that matter anything related to offshore. Despite knowing the story’s tragic outcome, the movie has gave tribute to how normal individuals proved extraordinary during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. Best scene: The best scene in this film would be when Mike helped other crew members to get to safety after the huge explosion. He was so in shock of what has just happened. Mike also was dedicated in searching for his boss, Mr Jimmy. Mr Jimmy was injured badly and he was also partially blind.

Film name: Finding Nemo Year released: 2003 Directors: Andrew Stanton, Lee Unkrich (co-director) Worldwide Box-Office Gross: $380,843,261 Why the movie rocks: In my opinion Finding Nemo is the best film Pixar Animations Studios have produced. The movie still reminds me of my childhood of never missing this movie when it was always aired in TV. Finding Nemo showed everyone of the love for a father to find his missing son. Marlin was very patient in finding his son despite having a very annoying stranger following him throughout the journey. I personally find this film very touching.

Best scene: One of the key scenes is when Dory speaking whale. This scene displayed two different characters, Marlin and Dory. Dory sees things in a very positive may and she is not afraid to try out new things. Marlin however is very negative and serious.

Jack

Film name: Baby Driver

Year Released: 2017

Director: Edgar Wright

Main Cast:

Ansel Elgort - Baby

Jon Hamm - Buddy

Eiza González - Darling

Micah Howard - Barista

Lily James - Debora

Kevin Spacey - Doc

CJ Jones - Joseph

Studio: Sony Pictures

Worldwide Box-Office Gross: US$ 101 mil

Brief synopsis:

This movie shows Baby a very good driver. He met an accident and lost his parents when he was young. He suffered trauma from the accident and have to listen to songs on earphones to drown out the ringing in his ear. He works under Doc, as a driver for criminals. In one of the mission, Debora, Barista’s girlfriend was killed because of Baby’s mistake. Barista seeked revenge.

Why this movie rocks:

The song choices for this movie is one of the best oneThe songs played for the scenes not just suit the scene but also give out the retro feeling, giving the movie much more taste to it.

The other thing i like about it is how the fact that every action and sound that is made in the movie follows the beat of the music played in the background. The fact that they have to follow the beat of the song and shoot this movie is very amusing.

Best scene: The best scene will be the one take scene on the early part of the movie. The part where baby buy coffee after robbing. The whole scene was taking with one take with all the small details that is happening behind the scene.

Film name: Split

James McAvoy - The psycho

Anya Taylor-Joy - Casey Cooke

Betty Buckley - Dr. Karen Fletcher

Haley Lu Richardson - Claire Benoit

Jessica Sula - Marcia

Studio: Universal Pictures

Worldwide Box-Office Gross: US$ 278 mil

Brief synopsis:

This movie talks about a person with 23 personalities in him. One of the person in him kidnapped Casey and her friends. There was different personalities taking over at different times leaving the girls confuse what is happening. They tried to escape and it didn’t end well. In the end, Casey was left alive because of a special reason.

Why this movie rocks:

This movie rocks because this movie somehow reflects on how we behave differently in different situation. We can have 2 or sometimes have 2 or even more sides of us and some people don’t even realize they have split personalities.

It also makes people realize they put on a mask everyday and live life when they want to live life of someone else.

The location of the shoot also enhanced the theme of the movie. It makes the audience feel they are trapped in the house together with the characters also. The different rooms also indicates the different personalities that is living in the main character.

Best scene:

When the main character turns into a monster. This is because no one believes there is a monster in him until the monster came out. This reflects on people who are very nice and polite, and there is a beast living in them. The transformation wasn’t too exaggerated and it felt realistic. It felt like it could really happen to someone.
